Study on inflation expectations in the survey of Swiss consumer sentiment

Abstract

The Swiss Consumer Sentiment Index has been one of the most important economic indicators for Switzerland since 1972. This survey recently underwent a revision. Since January 2023, a survey has been conducted in the new design alongside the existing survey. Questions on the quantitative inflation expectations of private households were also added to the new questionnaire, which cover the time horizons “the next twelve months” and “in five years.” The redesigned survey will entirely replace the existing one in February 2024. This study places the approach taken in the survey of quantitative inflation expectations as well as its first results into an international context.
